Riverboat Gamblers

There was a point in time before everything fit into neat subgenres, a period when rock music and the nascent punk scene were still discovering their sound and anything seemed possible. Looking back it’s hard to pinpoint the exact moment when these two genres converged but if you had to sum it up sonically it would probably sound a lot like the Riverboat Gamblers’ latest album The Wolf You Feed.

Listeners just need to listen to the first fifteen seconds of the Hives-worthy opener “Good Veins” to see that the band—which also includes guitarists Fadi el-Assad and Ian MacDougall, bassist Rob Marchant and drummer Sam Keir—achieved their goal largely because they weren’t trying to make a record that fits into today’s musical landscape. “I got really interested in the time when punk rock and old rock n’ roll were all converging and there wasn’t really a term for it yet, like with the Dictators bleeding over into the weirder Iggy Pop stuff,” Wiebe explains. “It’s edgy and intense but it’s still catchy and people could dance to it if they wanted to.”

Originally from Denton, Texas, the Riverboat Gamblers now reside in Austin, Texas and are currently signed to Volcom Entertainment.

Cobra Skulls
Cobra Skulls

Cobra Skuuuuuuuuuulls! They’re back like a bunch of filthy, similarly-dressed super heroes. Okay, let’s cut to the chase: You heard the name before but you don’t know the finer points of what the band is about, right? That’s where I come in. Devin, the singer, bass player is a six -foot-six, 118 lb. Argentinian freakshow of a man. He’s also a bit of a rabble rouser. He’s often mustachioed, not because of the sweet irony, but because that’s how they do it down there. He’s joined by Luke on the drums, who resembles Masters of the Universe’s Beast Man, and Adam, who (and I'm not even joking) honed his chops as a wedding singer and live Karaoke comptroller before he made the decision to make all the brides-to-be from his hometown cry and hit the road ten months a year. That means he can play “Total Eclipse of the Heart” and “Cry Me a River” on command. Beat that, assholes! Wait, there’s more!

The Cobra Skulls are from Reno, so lest you think this frustration with the modern world is prefabricated, let me assure you, it was homegrown in an artificial desert hellscape where flowers bloom in sand and hookers take you out to 29-cent breakfasts after breaking decomposing teeth off on your ballsack. I mean, on their new record there’s a song lamenting the loss of our free access to everything and anything in this world. “And water is next…” Devin ominously forewarns. Hey, like I said, Reno. They’re fucking crazy out there, but that’s rule number one of great art, man: Crazy is compelling. They didn’t teach you that in journalism school, did they? Didn’t think so.

What else, they’re on tour like crazy, they, themselves are crazy, uh…mentioned the mustache, mentioned Justin Timberlake…uh, OH! Yeah, Alternative Press named Cobra Skulls a “Band To Watch”, and none of these dudes even have that Jen Anniston haircut thing that is so big in that magazine, so this is a recommendation based on actual chops, innovation, and real, honest-to-god skull fucking ass kickery. Trust me, man. There’s no media-savvy corporate machine behind these guys. I mean, have you read their bio?

Fresh Kills
Fresh Kills

For their latest offering, Raise Up The Sheets, Freshkills tapped ‘elegant degenerate’ Jim Sclavunos, the No Wave icon who performed with Sonic Youth, Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, and the Cramps before hopping behind the Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds’ drum kit. Sclavunos: “Freshkills inhabit a dark but thrilling underworld in which relentless machine-like rhythmic intensity hammers ear-anvils at the bidding of wryly louche after-hours philosophy. They’re the visceral embodiment of power and poetry.”Raise Up The Sheetsattacks on every front like a pandemic. The songs are prettier, darker, more concise and more expansive. Lipez is wounded and acerbic, the rhythm section both tight and monstrous with military precision and vulgar swing, the twin guitars frantic, chaotic and dangerous as a sharpened screwdriver. The whole band sounds like they’ve been cornered and will have to fight their way out. It’s anyone’s guess who will win, but either way, it’ll be worth watching.Freshkills has toured the US and UK, sharing the stage with Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Sleigh Bells, TV On The Radio, …Trail of Dead, Future of the Left and Mission of Burma amongst many more. They’ve played The Bowery Ballroom, Shea Stadium, Glasslands, C squat and all points in between.
