Mephiskapheles are back in red and black for 2013. The band who invented the devilish, whimsical MTV- and radio-friendly genre of Satanic Ska, then defied critics by exploring even greater possibilities for their darkly original ska fusion, have reunited, with a new tour and new album in the works.
Formed in the East Village of New York City in early 1991 by a group of artists, ad-agency employees, and jazz musicians, Mephiskapheles played their first show on Long Island, and from day one began attracting a diverse, dedicated fan base.
Flash-forward to today; and with Satanic Ska being, without a doubt, the genre of music most relevant to our current times. Mephiskapheles are picking up where they left off, with a reissue program with Jump Up Records, a focused performance schedule, and a new Mephiskapheles album slated for 2014.
Inspecter 7’s sound employs all three waves of Ska (Traditional, 2-Tone and 3rd Wave) and many outside influences spanning from Jazz to Oi!. This is easy to understand when you see the diverse line-up of band members, and easy to pick out when you hear their music. From hard stomping ragers to traditional instrumentals to swinging dance tunes, Inspecter 7’s sound has something for every fan of Ska, and even those not so familiar with the music.
A brief History…
New Brunswick, NJ… the early 90’s: A bastion for underground music lives in this unsuspecting town, be it Hard-core, Punk, Funk, Alternative, or Reggae… there is a definite absence of one particular type of music in the “Hub City” (and in NJ in general) - that music is Ska. Late 1992… a ragtag group of Mods and Ska enthusiasts gathered in the basement of the infamous “Gingerbread House” on Welton Street, to have some beers, to jam, and to add life to the dormant Jersey Ska scene. This led to the birth of Agent 86, who played their first show at the Brighton Bar, in Long Branch, NJ. Several years, line-up (and name) changes later, Inspecter 7 was born.
Step2far began in the spring of 1992. CBGB was not having hardcore matinees due to the violence. There was still a few of the 80s HC bands still going strong, but the shows had been few and far between. Late 80s NYHC is the style we like to play. The bands that have influenced us over the years - AGNOSTIC FRONT, MURPHYS LAW, CRO MAGS, WARZONE (Raybeez was a big help when we first started out in 92) GBH, DISCHARGE, BURN, JUDGE, BOLD, SOIA, RAW DEAL, LEEWAY, BLACK FLAG, FEAR, YUPPICIDE, SFA, REJUVINATE, etc... you know, real street music.
